History of the breed
The breed of the Croatian Sheepdog has been developed for several centuries in eastern Slavonia , a Croatian agricultural plain. Immigrants would have introduced in this region if we believe the writings of the 14th and 18th century. The systematic breeding of the Croatian Shepherd Dog began in 1935 under the leadership of Professor Stjepan Romic. It was first exhibited on October 29, 1949 in Zagreb. Its first standard was drawn up in 1951 by Dr. Otto Rohr.
Physical features
His coat: very thick, dense, soft to the touch, but neither woolly nor harsh. The outer coat is wavy or curly, supple, with a length of 6 to 14 cm. The undercoat is dense, compact and soft. The set gives the dog excellent protection. The hair is longer on the neck, back, rump, back of limbs and tail.
Its color: unicolour black on the entire body. A few scattered white hairs may be allowed.
His head: almost wedge-shaped. The lines of the skull and muzzle are parallel. The skull is harmoniously drawn and oval in shape. The frontal furrow is not very pronounced. The occipital protuberance is a little more so. The stop is moderately developed. The nose is black and the nostrils well open, but not too pronounced. The muzzle becomes thinner towards the truffle. The lips are medium in thickness and tight against the jaw, which is strong and scissor bite (the toe joint is also tolerated). The cheeks are not very pronounced, but they are rounded and muscular.
Its ears: triangular in shape, with slightly rounded ends, well proportioned in size to the head, carried erect or semi-erect.
His eyes: medium in size, oval in shape, black to dark hazel in color, displaying an expression that is at the same time intelligent, lively and curious.
His body: strongly and harmoniously developed, while being elegant. Writable in a rectangle. The withers are slightly prominent with a gradual transition to the neck. The back is straight, horizontal and well muscled. The kidney is short, well muscled and well attached to the back and the rump, which is also well muscled, strong, broad, slightly rounded and oblique. The chest is deep, broad, the ribs well sprung. The bottom line is slightly raised between the sternum and the belly.
Its tail: in the continuity of the line of the croup. Thick at its root, it gradually tapers towards its tip. Moderately high set on, carried below the topline, saber or hook when the dog is at rest. When on alert, it is carried above the topline and can be rolled up.

It is recommended to brush the dog twice a week in order to maintain its cleanliness and appearance. During the moult, brushing becomes more frequent (3 times a week). Its hair, ears, eyes and pads should be examined after each outing in the wild to detect and remove any debris or external parasites.
His teeth need to be brushed frequently to remove tartar build-up and the proliferation of bacteria. Finally, if they do not wear out naturally, its claws need to be cut. If you are new to this, it is recommended that you seek advice from a veterinarian or groomer.
