History of the breed
The American Water Dog breed originated in the United States from the second half of the 19th century . It was developed and used by hunters in the American Midwest, mainly in the state of Wisconsin. Its deep origins are not sufficiently documented, so much so that today it is impossible to know with certainty the crosses which led to the American Water Dog . Nevertheless, we know that it is to FJ Pfeiffer that is attributed the 1st real breeding of dogs of this breed, in New London in Wisconsin.
The first standard, dating from 1920, was also drawn up on the basis of his work. It was subsequently adopted by the AKC (American Kennel Club) in 1940, then in a new version 50 years later. The breed was definitively recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) on November 2, 1979.

Physical features
His hair: uniformly wavy or characterized by tight curls. The outer coat is associated with a dense undercoat, the whole giving the dog good protection against water.
Its color: single- colored and uniformly liver, brown or dark chocolate.
His head: in proportion to the rest of the body, moderately long. The skull is broad and strong, the stop moderately drawn without being too pronounced.
His ears: moderately high set, located slightly above the eye line. Lobe-shaped, rather long and of good width.
His eyes: medium size, slightly rounded, light yellowish brown to hazelnut or dark brown, in accordance with the dress. Intelligent expression, alert and full of liveliness.
His body: developed, harmonious, powerful but not compact. The neck is round and moderately long, the top line straight or slightly sloping, the kidney solid, the chest well developed, the ribs well sprung and the flanks not raised.
Its tail: moderately long, curved, carried slightly below or above the line of the back, lively and furnished with moderately fringed hairs.
