History of the breed
If the Yugoslav Shepherd was bred for a very long time in a region that once belonged to Yugoslavia, its more ancient origins date back to Antiquity. It would seem, in fact, that he descended from the Hound of Epirus. Shepherds working in the mountainous regions of southeastern former Yugoslavia, now shared between the republics of Serbia and Macedonia, bred the Charplanina (its other name) for the remarkable abilities it displayed in keeping and the management of sheep herds.
The Yugoslav Shepherd then spread over the whole of Yugoslav territory and the breed signed its entry into the FCI registers in 1939 under the appellation Chien de Berger d’Illyrie (Ilirski Ovcar). In 1957, the name of Charplanina Yugoslav Shepherd Dog was officially adopted by the FCI. The official current standard for the breed was published on November 24, 1970.
