Basset Bleu de Gascogne

Other name: Bleu de Gascogne

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne gives an impression of heaviness when observing it. However, he wants to be quite agile. The hunting dog par excellence, the Bleu de Gascogne has an inescapable flair. He is eager for large spaces to run and exercise. A perfect traveling companion, he hates solitude and finds comfort in the presence of his master by his side. Playful, gentle, calm and attentive, he can sometimes use his thick voice (this can be disturbing). He is loyal, but also a little stubborn, hence a firm upbringing to be expected. He gets along wonderfully with children.

History of the breed

Bleu de Gascogne originates from France. It mentions dogs to bluish appearance from the 12th century in the Gascony region. The latter were used for hunting wild boar, wolves and also deer. Bleu de Gascogne is made from crosses of old French dogs, including the Saint-Hubert dog .

Originally from Gascony, it also comes from Béarn, a region in the south of France. Still, its true origin is a mystery. Some claim that it is the fruit of the mix between Bleus de Gascogne and Bassets Saintongeois, others think that it is the consequence of a mutation of the Grand Bleu de Gascogne.

Nevertheless, race is recognized in the early 20th century, with its standard first awarded in 1919. The race, having made discreet comeback in the early 1980s the International Federation Cynologique recognizes October 30, 1963
