Keith Walker did not hesitate to risk his life to save 16 dogs and cats living in a shelter where a fire had just broken out. For the founder of the establishment, this homeless man is a guardian angel and a hero.
Keith Walker is 53 years old, 40 of whom are homeless . His only family is his dog , a Pitbull named Bravo . Every evening, he drops him off at the W-Underdogs refuge , in Atlanta , Georgia (southern United States), so that his four-legged companion can spend the night in the warmth .
This is precisely what he was about to do on December 18, when he noticed that the kitchen of the said reception structure was in the throes of flames . Risking his life , he rushed into the building to rescue the 6 dogs and 10 cats there.
“ I’m not going to lie. I was very scared to go in with all this smoke. But God brought me there to save these animals, ”he told CNN . A courage and sensitivity to distress inspired by his friend Bravo : “ If you love a dog, you can love anyone in the world. My dog is my best friend. I wouldn’t be here without him. I knew I had to save all those other dogs ”.
Gracie Hamlin , founder of the W-Underdogs refuge, calls Keith Walker a “ hero ” and a “ guardian angel ”. She says that while the firefighters were reluctant to handle the dogs and waited for animal control to arrive, the 50-year-old was already inside and putting the dogs and cats to safety .
Fortunately, W-Underdogs were already scheduled to move a week after the incident. The animals are therefore located on the association’s new site , still in Atlanta .
On his Facebook page, W-Underdogs announced that part of the donations sent to him through an online fundraiser will be used to help Keith Walker .
