History of the breed

As its name suggests, the Podenco Canario is native to the Canary Islands , a Spanish archipelago located off the coast of northwestern Africa. His ancestors were brought from Egypt in Egyptian, Phoenician, Carthaginian or even Greek ships. The race is very old , since it is represented on more than one pharaoh’s tomb.

This dog is traditionally bred for rabbit or even ferret hunting. He distinguished himself in this practice thanks to his courage, his powerful sense of smell, his resistance and his ability to evolve on the most difficult terrain.

Physical features

His hair : short, smooth and dense.
Its color : more or less intense red (orange to mahogany red) and white.
Its head : long and in the shape of a truncated cone. The skull is flattened, the stop lightly marked and the nose broad.
Its ears : large, slightly erect on the sides when the dog is awake, with pointed ends, wide at birth.
Her eyes : small, almond-shaped, more or less dark amber in accordance with the dress, displaying an intelligent and noble expression.
His body : writable in a rectangle (slightly longer than high). The neck is muscular and supple, the back strong, the chest well developed without going down to the elbow, the belly raised.
Its tail : set low and in line with the rump, hanging or carried in a sickle, never rolled up.

Education
