As its name suggests, the Podenco Canario is native to the Canary Islands , a Spanish archipelago located off the coast of northwestern Africa. His ancestors were brought from Egypt in Egyptian, Phoenician, Carthaginian or even Greek ships. The race is very old , since it is represented on more than one pharaoh’s tomb.

This dog is traditionally bred for rabbit or even ferret hunting. He distinguished himself in this practice thanks to his courage, his powerful sense of smell, his resistance and his ability to evolve on the most difficult terrain.

Even if it is medium in size, the Podenco Canario would be much happier and more fulfilled in a house with a large fenced garden , ideally closer to nature, than in an apartment.
