History of the breed

The Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz is, as the name clearly indicates, originally from Andalusia in Spain. Several centuries ago, English wine merchants settled in the Jerez de la Frontera region of southern Andalusia, where sherry (a white wine much loved by the English) has traditionally been produced since that time. They brought their dogs with them, including ancestors of the Fox Terrier, which they crossed with local dogs. The goal of this approach was to create a dog capable of hunting rats and mice hiding between barrels in wine cellars.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the breed benefited from the contribution of the Toy Terrier. The first breeding club of the breed, the Club Nacional del Perro Andaluz Ratonero Bodeguero, was founded in 1993. Its standard was established in the same year. The Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz was recognized as a national breed in 2000 by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture and the Spanish Kennel Club, the Real Sociedad Canina de España (literally, the Royal Canine Society of Spain). However, the breed of Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz has not yet been recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, while several clubs and organizations around the world have done so.
