History of the breed

The Pumi was developed from the 17th ^century enjoying dog contributions from Germany and France, mainly burrows. The Magyar breeders were thus able to emphasize qualities which made them an excellent herding dog , specialized in the management of cattle, as well as a good guardian. This however was not until the early ^20th century that the Pumi was considered a full race.

Physical features

His hair: wavy, curly, medium length and forming supple and tight tufts. The outer coat is associated with an elastic undercoat.
Its color: unicolour gray, black, fawn or white. A small white mark on the chest is only tolerated.
His head: rather elongated and well proportioned to the whole. The skull has a broad, rounded top. The forehead is long and slightly domed (flat seen in profile), the superciliary arches moderately developed, the stop hardly visible, the nose narrow and black, the muzzle elongated, the lips tight and dark in color, the jaws strong and articulated. in regular and complete scissors, well muscled cheeks.
His ears: inverted V-shaped, very mobile, set high, erect with the upper third bent forward.
His eyes: medium large, oval in shape and rather slanted, dark brown in color, displaying a look full of liveliness and intelligence.
Its body: writable in a square, the height at the withers being roughly equal to the length. The silhouette is rather fine and harmonious, the musculature well developed. The neck is of medium length, carried high and well muscled, the top line straight, the withers marked and long, the back short and straight, the loins well supported, the croup short, moderately broad and slightly sloping, the chest straight and high, the ribs not very curved and flat, the belly firm and pulled back towards the rear.
Its tail: set high, forming an arc above the rump and covered with a hard hair and spread.

the   Pumi   is a very active, lively, energetic and enduring dog . Always inclined to work and learn, he shows off his intelligence and enthusiasm both as a herding dog, an area in which he is traditionally employed, and as a family dog. Particularly demonstrative, the Pumi is also a good guardian, since he is naturally wary of strangers.

Education

A dog as active and energetic as the Pumi calls for a firm education , certainly, but without any form of brutality. Maintenance and hygiene

the   Pumi is a dog that requires minimal maintenance due to its tight, curly coat. His hair loss remains moderate.

Grooming this dog other than manually is not recommended. The chisel should only be used to make minor corrections to the head and limbs. It does not need to be bathed frequently : 3 to 4 baths per year.

Its hair, ears, eyes and pads should be examined after each outing in the wild to detect and remove any debris or external parasites. Her teeth need to be brushed regularly to eliminate tartar build-up and the proliferation of bacteria. Finally, if they do not wear out naturally, its claws need to be cut.
